The Space Between Seeking + Achieving

Some major life achievements have happened recently, like getting engaged in my forties, for example. A life partner is something I’ve wanted (not desperately, but certainly). And now, after being single my entire adult life, I’m suddenly building a whole new chapter with someone else.

Now that I have it - this love, this partnership - what’s next?

I’ve realized something: I’m most comfortable as a seeker. Challenges excite me. And if I’m being really honest, “success” can feel less comfortable to me than “failure.” With any setback, I know I’m resilient, and I’ll pivot, regroup, and find another way. I’m really good at not looking back - maybe too good, because I’m always scanning the horizon for what’s next.

What’s less familiar, and sometimes less comfortable, is actually attaining what I’ve wanted or set out to do. It’s definitely something to work on (hello, self-worth). But the bottom line? I live really well in that space between seeking and achieving.

I’ve written before about how much I luxuriate in change. I’ve also mentioned THIS podcast episode on the liminal space that has spoken to me in different ways during different seasons of my life.

I know it’s not where most people like to live, but as someone who genuinely thrives in the liminal space, here’s my advice if you’re “in between” right now:

  • It’s a great place to be: It’s wonderful to achieve goals, but it’s also human (and awesome) to then want more and to expect more out of yourself.

  • You’re not stuck: This is a moment to breathe, reflect, and create.

  • Every possibility exists here: This is the best part! The in-between is so exhilarating because it holds all the potential for you.

For me, there is no “next” in the strictest sense with my fiancé; we’re here, together, creating this life, but the cool thing is we have so much to look forward to that I wasn’t remotely expecting and things I’m not even yet aware of (in both our joint and separate lives).

So if you’re in the space between right now, embrace it. Use the time to build something, plan your next adventure, or simply rest. And please remember to have fun in all of it!
